Wants Hierarchy

Is the Maslow hierarchy of needs a good basis for simulating what we expect people will do?  If so exactly how should it be worked into the simulations.  We need some research with this.  What is the current view of Maslow's hierarchy concept among psychologists?  In the simulations wants are identified as motivating behavior.  The wants are structured as a series of glasses.  Higher level glasses are inhibited from filling by empty glasses below.  Each glass leaks so that any satisfied want will need to be re-satisfied or continuously addressed.  Is this consistent with current psychological understanding?
